I came across Jamie Oliver's Mexican salad recipe online and thought it looked interesting. I'm not a huge fan of lime, so it was a risk, but one which turned out to be well worth taking!

As is often my way, I tweaked his recipe. He used red cabbage, but I didn't have any, so I used more white cabbage and for some colour added finely sliced purple mangetout on top. I have a jar of jalapēno peppers so used those.
Aren't they gorgeous? Because I grow a lot of my fruit and veg in the flower border, I chose some coloured varieties this year - ruby broad beans and these purple podded mangetout. They taste the same but add a striking dimension on the salad and look great in the border.
I served it with some simply boiled new potatoes, although Jamie reckons it goes very well with grilled chicken or pork chops. We all thought it would be a great addition to a BBQ too.
I'm definitely going to grow mange tout next year and a smaller pea crop. Yours look so lovely. Do you have a large garden? Where your logan berries grown in a cage? The birds are a pain! We are going to have to have a fruit cage next year.
ReplyDeleteI have a few mangetout and some sugar snap. Just perfect for a little freshly picked treat. My garden is a mere 85ft by 20ft, but I've crammed a lot in! I'd dig up the lawn if I was allowed!! The loganberries are trained along the fence and not netted. My neighbours feed the birds regularly so maybe they aren't hungry!
DeleteWow, that looks so tasty! My sort of food, I have the book it was in but not noticed it. Sometimes I think I have too many recipe books!
ReplyDeleteIt was really tasty and very zingy on the taste buds! Give it a go :)
DeleteThat looks delicious and perfect for having in this weather. X
ReplyDeleteI'd certainly recommend it - very fresh and clean tasting!
ReplyDeleteThe Mexican street Salad was delicious. Trust me!

ReplyDeleteWith Mexican foods lime is the most used citrus.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't cook without lime, lemon and oranges.
cheers, parsnip
I love lemon and orange flavour, but a, less keen on lime. However, it worked very well in this recipe! When I have a polytunnel, i will try to grow my own lemons.
