My bionic dog

I know, not everyone is interested in dogs or indeed operations, but these X Rays are so amazing I had to share them!

They cut the ulna and then screwed it together with a titanium plate and six titanium screws (at a cost of over £400 for the crews alone!). This elongated the ulna to better distribute the weight. The gap will eventually heal with new bone growing to fill the gap. Amazing!

He's three weeks post op today and very comfortable with his new bionic leg :)

Unfortunately, he'll need the other elbow doing in around six months time. "We can rebuild him......" as the saying goes.

Welcome to Effieq and Clarissa - lovely to have you join :)

  1. Amazing! Jet will feel like a new dog when he's rebuilt! If we ever have another dog I'm definitely taking out insurance as wouldn't want the worry of unexpected expenses.

    1. Oh yes, I'd never have a dog without insurance. It's been a life saver without previous dog too. Worth every penny. To think we've had Jet 6 months so paid in about £100 and they've paid out £3000. I'd say that was a good deal!

  3. Bless him, its truly amazing what they can do for animals alike. I had to major hip operations to mend my own hip a long old story, but they cut and re aligned my pelvis and pinned my hip bone back into the correct place. Born with hip dysplasia I was. So I have screws and bolts left in my right hip as both my ops were 1 year recovery wheelchair bound for 8 months I had had enough of being poked around so they left them in after my second major op. Jet will soon be running a round again well done for giving him the choice, dee :-)

    1. Yikes that all sounds very traumatic for you! Nowadays you might have been given one of those new porcelain hip joints which will last a lifetime apparently.
If Jet hadn't had his op (and the next one), he'd be totally unable to walk by the age of 6 - too horrendous to contemplate. The vet reckons he'll still have arthritis, but should live until he's 12 quite healthily, fingers crossed. He's such a lovely dog :)
