A new bed for Jet

I saw this on Facebook today and it made me smile :)

I can only assume that Jet had been allowed to sleep on the settee in his previous home as, on arrival at ours, he immediately adopted the settee in the back room as his bed! It's an old settee, so I covered it with blankets and allowed him his comfort.

However, when he has his ops, he won't be alowed to jump up on to the settee, so he will need a suitable replacement place to lay his weary body. I was horrified at the price of dog beds - £40! - especially as he will no doubt go back to the settee as soon as he is able and I don't really have space for a large dog bed.

I had brought back a decent single duvet from Mum's house to replace my son's duvet which seemed to have lost its oomph. So I hatched a plan to turn the old duvet into a dog bed. I folded the long sides into the middle and sewed them together. I then folded the long rectangle in half again to make a smaller rectangle. I put it on the floor to fold and Jet immediately came and laid on it! Not helpful to me at all, but a good sign :)

This didn't make sewing the seems together any easier!

Once I had sewn all the seems together, I set about making a cover for it out of an old single duvet cover which I had also brought back from Mum's. And there you have it, a brand new comfy dog bed for absolutely no cost and it's saved the duvet from being relegated to landfill.

Probably a bit more floral than Jet would have chosen .....

...... But it doesn't seem to have put him off!

  1. Can't beat a bit of ingenuity! Hope he remembers to sleep on it after his ops!

    1. Yes, I'm thinking I may have to turn the settee to the wall to stop him automatically jumping up there!

  2. I did exactly the same and blogged about it a couple of years ago. The dogs loved it, and yes like Jet they were on it at the folding stage and seemed miffed to be turfed off while I sewed it up. I covered theirs with a £3 fleece blanket that I got from Asda and made a spare cover for when it was in the wash. It lasted ages and washed a treat.

I think they love having something for their beds that smell so much of us it must be comforting for them, and this will be especially nice for Jet when he's feeling a bit out of sorts after his ops.

    1. I have to say, it's a braver dog than me who would want to sleep on my son's bedding!! Jet seems very taken with it mind but of course it's not that he smells much sweeter :)

  3. Look at Jet's shiny coat! He looks very comfy there. I improvised with a bed for our cat. She's meant to sleep on a dining chair thick cushion ( the ones that tie onto chairs) in a nice warm corner, but she ends up on our bed every night , sneaking on as quiet as she can.

    1. It's funny - loads of people mention how shiny his coat is. We do give him cod liver oil so perhaps that's it, if so, I might start taking some to control my frizz!! Our cats sleep all over the place, but are often to be found on our bed in the morning too.

  4. Sol is not allowed on the furniture he was at his previous home but we put a stop to it, it only took a few days, I recently re-filled his bed for him and now I hav trouble getting him out of it :-)

    1. No, I didn't imagine I'd be the kind of person to allow him on the settee, but it's only that settee, which is old and sad already so I found I didn't mind. I saw the picture of Sol on his newly plumped bed - he looked very cosy :)

  5. I've just got a terrific bargain on a large Danish design dog bed. If you google Royal Stewart tartan pet bed oval size 101cm Amazon, it's on offer down from about £55 to £20. Tartan isn't a fabric I would have chosen but these dog beds are brilliant quality (I've got one already) and at that price I don't care about the fabric - I can always throw a blanket over it.

    2. I had a look - it looks very smart with the strong tartan pattern actually! That's a really good bargain :)

    3. New dog bed arrived today. My dog's bottom wouldn't fit in it! They've sent the wrong size. It's more like a cat bed.

    4. Oh honestly it's so frustrating that nothing seems to be straightforward these days!! I sympathise with you :(

    5. The company have been very apologetic and are sending out a replacement and insist that I keep the other bed. I will see if I can donate it to an animal rehoming centre.

    6. Well that's something at least. Much better service than many even if they have made a mistake. No doubt the local animal centre will be very grateful for your donation :)

  6. It's always good to have a helper at an important stage. A great money saving make.

    1. Thanks - not surely exactly how helpful I would rate him as, but he's so adorable, I didn't mind :)
