Big girls blouse

We have some seriously soppy pets! Yesterday morning, I got out of bed to do the animal rounds and before I could blink, in to my place hopped one black cat. He made himself extremely comfortable and stayed there most of the day!

I have to admit I was rather envious :)

Jet has always had a fear of the Hoover and the lawnmower. He copes with the steamer and other noisy machines like my sander etc, but he's developed a new more extreme fear since his operation.

Every now and again, he will start to get really agitated, shaking, whining and being very clingy. Because he had had a major op, we presumed he was in pain, so had been giving him painkillers. Then we realised that he was still doing it despite the painkillers. After a process of elimination, we have come to the conclusion he has a pathological terror of the dishwasher! Every time I turn it on, he starts. It's a Bosch and very quiet for a dishwasher actually, but he can't cope with it! Seriously?! He's a big girl's blouse :)

Trying to be all gangster, but underneath is a heart of jelly!

  1. One of our dogs is terrified of the Hoover. She moves from room to room to avoid it. Yet, she lets me dry her with the hairdryer!

  2. Our cat is scared of everything including other cats! The funniest thing she does is when she hears foil or paper rustling in the kitchen, she runs off with her eyes screwed up as this is the noise that's made when her monthly flea capsule is opened - which she's scared of!! It recently took 2 adults several goes at getting her to swallow a worming tablet.

  3. The gardening hose here and the shower. She doesn't like. She began making a fuss at New Year but we took her out to watch the fireworks and that seemed to help. Had a dog with severe fear of thunder once. He used to tear the house apart, poor old thing. Not easy. Pam in Norway

  4. what about every time you turn the dish washer on you give him a treat? then he will associate the noise with something nice. it also could be that the noise is too high pitched for you to hear?

  5. Sol's idea above is the best way to treat this. Try to keep him away from the dishwasher for a couple of days and then start the treat regime.

You never know one of the 'machines' at the vets where he had his operation may have sounded similar while he was feeling very poorly and afraid and separated from you, and he could be linking the sound of the dishwasher back to this vulnerable time.

  6. When the children were young they'd bring home friends, my dog hated children. He was never nasty to them but chose to take himself off to bed rather than be around them. I think I was their voices and rapid movements. He was obviously very clever, I should have gone to bed too!

  7. aahhh bless him he does look rather cool though :-) My old girl Kia and Milly were both scared of the hoover to begin with but being greyhounds and ex racers they had lever lived in a house before so it was all new to them. Now I can go right up close to them both. dee x

  8. Oh I love the photo, he looks gangster to me. We very rarely use our dryer but when we do out cat sits on the stairs and howls, it is really weird as she ignores the really load air ambulance that flies over the house!
