Thank you!

After my post about my vision for my future, Dawn from http://doingitforourselfs.blogspot.co.uk had suggested I read 'Hovel in the Hills' - an account of a couple's challenges and joys living off grid in rural Wales in the 1960s and 1970s. Dawn very kindly offered to send me her spare copy of the book, which arrived today. What an absolute treat to receive a gift from a fellow blogger :)

It arrived at just the right moment because I am feeling a little sorry for myself today, having developed a nasty cough which is tiring and debilitating, so I now have the perfect reason to sit quietly reading my new book (which is research after all!) whilst I recuperate!

Mr D and I watched a programme a couple of weeks ago about over the counter medicines, so I have been soothing my cough with hot lemon and honey. I wasn't at all surprised when they said that no cough mixtures contain ingredients that will help with a cough, although I have found one - Pulmo Bailey - an old fashioned concoction, which knocks you out at night when nothing else will! I'm hoping to be coughing less tomorrow as a friend of mine has offered me a chance to have a go at making a clay poppy head to put in my garden. Post to follow if it happens! X

  2. I've got all three of those books, they're wonderful. OH and I have had ongoing colds & coughs (mine developed into tonsillitis), he likes the proprietary honey & lemon sachets, I prefer the real thing with a couple of soluble aspirins dissolved in. A slug of ginger wine makes it taste quite delicious. Hope you feel better soon. Haven't heard of that cough medicine, where do you get it?

    1. The Pulmo Bailey can be bought in Boots. It smells like TCP and tastes pretty horrendous, but I mix it in with hot black currant and because it's the only thing that's ever worked, I have grown to love it! I was brought up on honey, lemon, glycerine and aspirin!

  3. I too watched that programme. We've always used honey and lemons on the advice of my MIL, I haven't bought cough mixture for over 30yrs!
Hope you're feeling better soon x

The only one I buy is Pulmo Bailey, but the rest are pointless.

  4. Get well soon! I tried the Pulmo Bailey over Christmas and for me it was the one that really worked - tastes foul though but I was desperate for some relief!! I wonder if that book is still available to buy? (Mrs LH)

  6. It seems so many people have gotten the cold or flu lately. I hope you feel better soon.
I have never seen Pulmo Baily here but it sounds interesting. I feel if you can calm the cough everything can heal.
When desperate I use Vicks on my chest and the warm heating pad.
The book sound really interesting must look it up.

    cheers, parsnip

    1. Don't know where I caught this from - I don't go out much! I'm hoping it stays at a cough and doesn't develop into flu. I do find a hot water bottle either on my chest or my back helps.
      I'm really enjoying the book.

    1. You've had that a while now haven't you?! I hate feeling ill especially if the weather is nice. I got up this morning, but having showered I was so exhausted I had to go and lie down again!! Let's hope we both feel fully fit again very soon!

  9. I'm glad you are enjoying the Hovel. Garden in the Hills is also brilliant but sad at the end when they have to move away. Kitchen in the Hills is a recipe book she did after they moved and Patch in the Forest is about their years in the Forest of Dean after their 13 years near Llanrwst. I've re-read Hovel and Garden so many times I almost know them off by heart.

Get better soon. "Drink plenty of water and take paracetamol" this was always my advice to the children when they were away at uni and would ring up saying they felt ill!

    1. I'm doing my best with the drinking and have plenty of paracetamol (within limits of course!). I'll have to look out the other books in the series as the Hovel is so lovely:)

  10. I would recommend lots of hot, long steamy showers or baths, drink hot drinks and take paracetamol. There has been a nasty chesty cold going round up here too and it's leaving people very tired for a few weeks, so take care x

    1. Oh no not weeks!!! I'm going to dose up extra well tonight in the hope I get a better nights sleep. Of course poor old Mr D is suffering too because I'm coughing so violently!! I've had lots of hot drinks, not feeling much like food. I have no idea where this came from!! Darn it's!

  11. What a lovely gesture. I hope you feel much better soon. At least you have your book to read. The best thing for a cold is a good nights sleep. To achieve this I usually have a glass of Brandy. :-) x
