Home made Birthday gift

A good friend celebrated her birthday on Sunday so I wanted to give her a homemade gift. I already had the home made soaps, but that wasn't enough so I set about creating a button 'picture' for her.
I already had a small canvas, which I painted with a tester pot given to me by another friend who is having her entire house redecorated after a terrible flood (from her water tank rather than river). The colour is described as 'port' - I needed a dark background as I had a bag of white buttons.
Then I drew out a heart shape template which I transferred onto the canvas in pencil. I was going to use my newly acquired glue gun, but it didn't come with any glue sticks, so I reverted to my trusty PVA. Carefully and painstakingly, I positioned the buttons as randomly as I could, varying sizes and opacity (or indeed transparency!) and glued them in place with a dab of PVA applied with a small tip brush.
Once I was happy with the design, I did a quick touch up of the background colour as, inevitably, there where some small traces of glue on the outside of the heart shape.
Left to dry and I'm quite pleased with the result. I guess you could customise the background colour according to the colour scheme of the room...

On a totally different note, but still a 'gift', my youngest decided to have a lot of hair cut off this weekend (12 inches to be precise). Rather than throw it away, she has decided to donate it to a charity that uses human hair to make real wigs. All her own idea, bless her! It sits very well with my way of thinking too and I'm very proud of her for researching it and following it through :)

  2. Your home made picture is gorgeous. I saw something similar for sale in a craft shop recently and it was priced at £30.
That's a lot of hair your daughter's had chopped off. Lovely that it's going to a really good cause, just hope she likes her new "do". (Mrs LH)

    1. Blimey! I'd really like to find a small café or somewhere that might sell a few for me I think. Wasn't imagining they'd fetch that much mind! She's very happy with her hair thanks :)

    2. Yes, it was v.similar to your design. I was looking for something for a baby girl but the buttons and frame were more blue and boy related. If it had been for a girl I would have bought it. There's money to be made there!!!
